Categories of MTN Scholarships 2023 to Apply for

The MTN Scholarships 2023 is basically categorised into three (3). While one is automatic (Top 10 UTME Scholarship), interested and eligible candidates can apply for the other two main academic scholarships available from MTN (MTN Science and Technology Scholarship [MTN STS] and MTN Scholarship for blind students [MTN SBS]) They categories are as explained below:

MTN Top 10 UTME Scholarship

This scholarship category was initiated in 2020. It targets the top 10 highest-scoring candidates of JAMB UTME listed by JAMB. These top 10 best-scoring candidates automatically qualify for the MTN top 10 UTME scholarships. Therefore, no application is required from the general public.  The successful candidates are awarded scholarships worth N200,000.00 from their 100 level through to graduation if they maintain the MTN required grades.

Apply for the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship (MTN STS)

The MTN Science and Technology Scholarship (MTN STS) started in 2010. It targets 300 level students studying Science & Technology-related courses, in Nigerian Public Tertiary Institutions (Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education). Therefore only 300 level students in the required field of study and who have maintained their good grades are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Apply for the MTN Scholarship for Blind Students (MTN SBS)

The MTN Scholarship for blind students (MTN SBS) programme commenced in 2012 for visually impaired students in 200 and 300-level studying any course in Nigerian public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Sixty high-achieving visually impaired students will receive a ₦200,000.00 scholarship annually until they graduate, provided they maintain the necessary GPA.

Eligibility criteria for the MTN scholarship 2023

There are four (4) main eligibility stated by MTN on their Scholarship application portal. Therefore, it is wise before a candidate applies for any of the MTN Scholarship types to research thoroughly and understand the eligibility criteria. A. Institution of study

Only students enrolled in Nigerian public tertiary institutions (university, polytechnic, or college of education) are eligible to apply for the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship (STS) or the MTN Scholarship for Blind Students (SBS).

2. Course of study

The MTN Scholarship programmes target different students based on the scholarship category.

The MTN Science and Technology Scholarship (STS) is available to students admitted and currently schooling in Nigerian public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education at the time of this programme who are majoring in a science or technology-related field. It is available to students in the 300 level only in the relevant fields of study.

The MTN Scholarship for Blind Students (SBS) is for visually impaired students in their 200 and 300 levels. Only such students in Nigeria’s public universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education are eligible to apply for this category.

3. Level of study

Because Nigerian public tertiary institutions don’t have uniform academic calendars MTN Foundation has structured its scholarship programmes to accommodate the students without stress.  As a result of the differences, the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship (STS) application is open to students who have completed their second semester 200 level examinations and are going to the 300 level, including students who are currently enrolled in the 300 level.

The MTN Scholarship for Blind Students (SBS) is available to blind students enrolled in the second and third years of study at any of Nigeria’s public universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education. However, for law students whose program is a five-year one, the MTN Scholarship is only open to students in their third year of the legal discipline.

4. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

MTN Science and Technology Scholarship

• The Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)  students at any Nigerian public tertiary institution can apply for the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship (STS) as long as such student possess a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.4 (Over a grade point of 4.0) or 3.5 (second class upper).
• Students in STEM fields who wish to enrol in the Higher National Diploma (HND) program at public polytechnics must have earned a CGPA of 3.0 or higher in the OND program.
• Direct Entry students looking to enter the third year of study in a STEM field at the university level are expected to have a CGPA of at least 3.0 (upper credit) in the relevant subject area from the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) program.

MTN Scholarship for Blind Students (SBS)

• Students who are visually impaired and are enrolled in a higher education institution must maintain a 2.5 or higher in their cumulative grade point average (CGPA).
• Students who are blind and wish to tap into the MTN scholarship program at a public polytechnic must have completed the OND program with a minimum CGPA of 2.0 and have been accepted into the HND program.
