Undergraduate Scholarships in Nigeria

Undergraduate scholarships are those financial aid awarded by public and private organizations to undergraduates in recognized institutions in Nigeria. Most of these scholarships are free to apply and some are currently ongoing, therefore interested Nigerian undergraduates can apply to ones that are still available for the session. Furthermore, the majority of these scholarships are fully funded, in order words, it covers tuition fees, accommodation cost, and other take-home stipend. Moreso, selection criteria depend largely on the institution awarding the scholarship, meanwhile, there are still general requirements. We will bring that to your awareness in this article.

Eligibility for Undergraduate Scholarships in Nigeria

We stated before that the eligibility criteria for several scholarships in Nigeria largely depend on the institution offering the scholarship. However, this is a general eligibility criterion:

• The candidates must be a Nigerian
• The students must be an undergraduate (mostly 100 and 200 level) of a recognized institution in Nigeria.
• Both male and female scholars are eligible to apply
• The applicant should not be below 18 years of age.
• Some scholarships are course selective like the MTN scholarship for Science students. This depends on the organization offering the scholarship to choose from.

Requirements for Undergraduate Scholarships in Nigeria 2023/2024

Undergraduates who wish to apply for scholarships must be ready to provide every requirement. These requirements differ as scholarships differ, However, we give a list of some general requirements that must be in place to apply for scholarships in Nigeria. It is important to note that, requirements for abroad scholarships are way different from the criteria for Nigeria scholarships. Therefore, here are the requirements for Undergraduate Scholarships in Nigeria 2023/2024.

• The applicant must have an Admission Letter from a recognized Institution
• Must present a JAMB Admission Letter
• Applicants must have a Local government Identification Letter
• Candidates must have a Birth Certificate or Declaration of Age
• Candidates must have an O’Level result with at least 5 credits in five subjects including English and Maths.
• Must have a passport photograph
•  Candidates should have a school ID Card for more recognition.
• Candidates must have a GP not below 3.00 (scholarships for 200L students). See the current GPA for scholarships.

NNPC/TOTAL Undergraduate University Scholarships

Every year, the management of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), in conjunction with the Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria (TUCN): Total Exploration & Production Nigeria Limited (Total E&P Nig Ltd) and Total Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPNI) and their partners offer scholarships to deserving undergraduates in Nigeria Tertiary Institutions.

Eligibility: Full-time Undergraduate studies in a recognized university, must be in 100 or 200 level as at the time of application.

SHELL SPDC JV Undergraduate University Scholarships Award

This is an undergraduate scholarship awarded to Undergraduates in Nigerian Universities to help with academic expenditure. Moreso, the Shell SPDC JV Scholarship is merit-based. It is in two (2) categories namely:

• The  National Merit Award (NM)
• The Areas of Operation Merit Award.

Eligibility: The National Merit Award (NM) is open to all Nigerians while the Areas of Operation Merit Award are for Nigerian undergraduates who are rightful indigenes of the SPCS’s operational area in Bayelsa, Imo, Delta, Abia and Rivers State.

Jim OVia Undergraduate Scholarship

The Jim Ovia Undergraduate Scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship awarded to Nigeria Youth by Mr Jim Ovia. This scholarship was known to be MUSTE Scholarship in the past. However, this scholarship covers the tuition fees, accommodation and maintenance allowance of the eligible students.

NNPC/ADDAX Scholarship for Undergraduate

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in collaboration with ADDAX awards financial aid to Nigerian Undergraduates in Tertiary Institutions under the National Merit Scholarship Awards Scheme.

Eligibility:

• Must be a 100-level student in any recognized Tertiary institution in Nigeria
• Must be a Nigerian
• Must have an O’Level result with at least 5 credits in five subjects including English and Maths.

NNPC/CHEVRON Undergraduate University scholarships

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in collaboration with CHEVRON provides scholarships to undergraduates studying in tertiary institutions. This is to smoothen their academic journey and enable them to have a better experience and excellent academic results.

Eligibility: 

• Applicants must be 200-level students in a recognized university
• Only students studying the following courses are eligible to apply; Law, ass Communication/Journalism, Accountancy, Architecture, Agricultural Engineering/Agricultural Science, Chemical Engineering, Business Administration/Economics, Computer Science/Computer, Civil Engineering, Engineering/System Engineering, Environmental Studies/Surveying, Geology/Geophysics, Human Medicine/Dentistry/Pharmacy, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical/Metallurgical & Materials Engineering.

MTN Foundation Science & Technology Scholarship

This scholarship is being awarded to students from both universities, colleges of education and polytechnics in Nigeria. The MTN Foundation scholarship is being renewed yearly for existing awardees so far as they maintain a minimum of 3.5 CGPA or its equivalent.

Eligibility:

• Must be a full-time student in a recognized tertiary institution
• Must be in 200 level as at the time of application
• Must have a minimum of 3.5 CGPA
