The Mastercard Foundation is an Independent organization that the Mastercard Internal created. They operate independently from the parent organization, having their own Board of directors, vision, mission, guiding principles, and employees. The foundation has grown from just three (3) employees to becoming the largest visionary foundation in the whole world.

Moreso, they award fully-funded scholarships to deserving scholars across the continents including Africa. They partner with other visionary organizations and have positively affected the lives of over 51 million people and families.

In 2006, the Foundation decided to focus on Africa. Since then, they have developed new programmes and initiatives.

Programmes and Initiatives of the Mastercard Foundation

There are several programs launched by the Mastercard Foundation since its inception. These include:

  1. The Young Africa Works Strategy was launched in 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda. This is aimed at empowering 30 million young people, especially young women to secure dignified work.
  2. In 2019, they launched the Young Africa Works Programming in Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, and Ethiopia in the year 2020
  3. The Young Africa Works Programming established in Nigeria and Uganda
  4. The COVID-19 Recovery and Resilience Programme. This was launched in 2020 during the global pandemic to assist communities and institutions in Africa. Also, their activities extended to other indigenous communities in Canada to help respond to the ill impacts of the pandemic.
  5. They also gave rise to EleV. EleV is a learning partnership that focuses on breaking the barriers to post-secondary school education. This is mainly for indigenous youth in Canada. This programme is operating at Yukon College and Vancouver Island University.
  6. The Mastercard Foundation Fund for Rural Prosperity provides financial assistance to small-scale farmers.
  7. The Mastercard Foundation Scholarship programmes. This is for economically disadvantaged young and brilliant scholars to pursue their dreams.

Annually, the Mastercard Foundation awards academically brilliant students across Africa scholarship opportunities to pursue their dreams. This programme has supported about 40,000 young people in Africa to pursue their secondary or tertiary education.

General Eligibility Criteria for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Programme
